Delicate Under-Eye Treatment: Choosing the Best Options

The skin around your eyes is more sensitive and thinner than the other areas on the face. If your eyes are the windows to your soul, the skin under the eyes is a clear picture of your age. The signs of ageing appear here first.

Many people assume that the skin on all parts is the same and there is no need for using different products for specific parts. But as it turns out, the skin underneath eyes deserves special treatment to deal with its typical problems like dark circles, dryness, wrinkles and swelling.

How is under-eye skin different?

The skin underneath the eyes has very little fat under it. This fat shrinks as we age. Without plumping this fat up, the skin is likely to get wrinkly.

Collagen keeps the skin and muscles underneath springy and taut. However, it starts to diminish as we age and it becomes challenging to spring it back up. Facial expressions like laughing and squinting in the sun can cause wrinkles and fine lines to appear.

The under-eyes skin is thinner and more translucent than other skin on other parts of your body which cause blood vessel or veins underneath it appears as dark circles.

Best Strategy to maintain good skin underneath eyes:

The skin around the eyes has no oil glands, therefore, it is likely to get dry easily. Use a moisturizer with sunscreen during the day to protect it from the sun. In the evening, treat it with an especially rich emollient with zero SPF in it. The skin soaks up extra moisture during sleep. Apply only a pea-size amount of the cream under the eyes with your ring finger. Dab gently instead of rubbing hard.

Best Ingredients for under-eyes skin:

Look for the creams with peptides to boost the skin’s ability to produce collagen.

To treat dark circles caused by hyperpigmentation choose a cream with nicotinic acid which is extracted from the vitamin B niacin.

Discoloured and darkened skin under the eyes can be taken care of with creams containing ingredients like azelaic acid, retinoic acid, glycolic acid and kojic acid. These ingredients are to be used with great caution as they are strong and can cause irritation.

Techniques to handle skin underneath eyes:

Scrubbing, rubbing, and stretching the skin under the eyes can exacerbate thinning and cause inflammation leading to redness and dark circles.

You have to be careful not to rub when applying skincare product or removing makeup from that area.

Sleep on your back to prevent fluid build-up underneath the eyes which can cause sagging of the skin.

Use cold items like an ice pack, cold tea bags, and cucumber slices to treat puffiness of eyes in the morning.
